Most chinese believe in luck. Although i must admit that we cannot give excuses for our failure to luck, luck does play a role in our life.

What is Luck?

Luck is good fortune which occurs beyond one's control, without regard to one's will, intention, or desired result. There are at least two schools of thoughts to this subject. In the prescriptive sense, luck is the supernatural and deterministic concept that there are forces (e.g. gods or spirits) which prescribe that certain events occur very much the way the laws of physics will prescribe that certain events occur. It is the prescriptive sense that people mean when they state that they "do not believe in luck". In the descriptive sense, luck is merely a name we give to events after they occur which we find to be random, incidental, coincidence and perhaps improbable.

Fengshui believe that the day we were born which is year, month, day and time call the four pillars of destiny we are fated or predestined to a certain degree. Through bazi analysis we are able to calculate the ten years luck period or the ten years luck cycle.

There are two fate luck cycles for people in Chinese astrology. One is the 10-year major cycle 大运, the other is the annual cycle 流年远. Chinese astrology can tell the rise and fall of a human destiny or future from these cycles, which are represented by Heavenly Stems and Earthly roots or branches. This is just a general statement. Why general statement? The reason is we have to weight the strengths of his "day", "time" and "year" heavenly stem and earthly roots.

Now on the subject of turning-points in life, because the journey of life is divided into ten years period and this ten years period also consist of a heavenly stem and earthly branch; which means the "five elements" come into play.

Take for example an individual favourable elements are water and wood hence if he enter into this phase, he will be extremely lucky and enjoy good fortune. On the other hand if this  person goes into earth and metal cycle it means bad luck because earth consume water and metal conquer wood.
